GETTING STARTED:

After viewing the title page, press any key to go to the Main Menu. The
Main Menu is made up of easy to use light bar selectable options. There are
three 'status' indicators to the right of the menu that display the current
Duplex, Baud rate, and Carrier. Carrier indicates whether you are ON-LINE or
not. There is also an abbreviated status indicator at the lower right of the
playfield, so you can check the status during game play. To change Duplex
(Full/Half) press CONTROL-D. To change Baud rate press CONTROL-B.

MAIN MENU:

---- Install Modem ----

The first thing you will need to do is to Install your modem. If you
have a Datalink, the program automatically finds and installs it at the
highest baud rate possible. If not, it will default to a 1200 baud modem in
slot 2. To change this, highlight INSTALL MODEM by using the arrow keys and
press <RETURN>. It will then ask you to select the slot number of your modem
and press <RETURN>.

---- Terminal Mode ----

Use this to execute 'AT' commands to dial, answer, and setup your modem
to a particular configuration.

     For example: ATS0=1X4M3L3&D2

This will set your Datalink 2400 to answer on 1 ring (S0=1), enable extended
result code 4 (X4), turn speaker on after dialing (M3), set speaker volume
high (L3), and set DTR to command state (&D2). These commands are specific to
the Datalink 2400 and Hayes Smartmodem 2400 and may not work with other
modems. Consult your manual for the AT command set of your modem.

To dial a number use the AT commands to dial.

     For example: ATDT5551212

This will dial TONE (DT) the number 555-1212. To dial PULSE use DP.

---- Begin Game ----

Highlight BEGIN GAME and press <RETURN> to start a game. Your character
will appear in the playfield and wait for the other player to begin. As soon
as both players have entered the Begin Game section, the game will start.

---- Hang up ----

This is used to hangup the phone after you are finished playing.

---- Exit ----

This will exit you from Modem Surround by calling the BYE routine in
ProDOS. It will not hangup the phone, so you will still be connected, via
modem, to the other player. This may be handy if you wish to stay on-line and
go to another application such as DataTERM. In this way, you could run
DataTERM and then transfer files or whatever with the other player without
releasing the phone line. If you hit CONTROL-RESET, though, you WILL
disconnect the modem and lose carrier.

GAME PLAY:

The object of the game is to 'surround' the other player and force him to
crash into a wall or a players 'trail'. Both your trail and your opponents
trail are lethal. Your character will always be moving. Use the arrow keys
to change direction.

One player will have to call the other. A simple way to get connected is
to have one player set his modem to answer on 1 or 2 rings (S0=1 or S0=2) and
have the second player call (ATDT) the first from the Terminal Mode. Be sure
both players set there Baud rates the same or you won't be able to see what
the other person is typing. Once connected (indicated by the CONNECT
message), change your Duplex to Half (CONTROL-D) so you can see what you type
and you can 'talk' to the other person.

The upper right hand corner of the screen shows the number of games
played (Gam), your wins (Lcl for local), and your opponents wins (Rem for
remote). There is also a 'timer' bar at the lower left of the playfield that
moves up as the game progresses. The timer has no affect on the game; it just
shows a relative length of play time per game.

If you wish to 'CHAT' with the other player during a game, press <ESC>.
This will turn on a 'light' in the upper left corner of the screen. Game play
will continue until the other player also presses <ESC>. Once the other
player has responded to the 'chat light', game play in paused and each player
can type to each other as in the Term. Mode. To exit CHAT press <ESC> again.

After a player 'dies', you will be put into the CHAT mode so you can
harass the loser. When you are ready for a rematch, press <ESC> and you will
return to the Main Menu. Begin Game will be highlighted, so simply pressing
<RETURN> will start another game.
